A place that is really quiet. The room at Microsoft headquarters is the quietest place in the world.
In 2015, Microsoft built the quietest place on Earth. Although it feels like a meditation sanctuary, few people can stay in the quietest room for long. Here, absolute silence gradually turns into an unbearable ringing in the ears. A room located at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington is known as an anechoic chamber. The silence in this room is literally deafening.
What is it like to be in the quietest room in the world?
Although sometimes you definitely want to escape into silence, this room will not bring you a blissful feeling. After a few minutes, you can hear your own heartbeat. Hold on a little longer and you'll hear your blood rushing and your bones creaking.
Inside, the noise level is measured in minus decibels: -20.3 dB , which is 20.3 decibels below the threshold of human hearing. To give an idea: calm breathing has a noise value of 10 dB in a normal room, and a whisper has a value of 30 dB.
The concrete bunker currently holds the Guinness World Record for the quietest place in the world, after being awarded the title by another chamber in Minneapolis, which has a noise level of -9.4 decibels.
What is the world's quietest room for?
Like most anechoic chambers, Microsoft's quiet room is used to test audio equipment and electronic devices. The tech giant uses it to analyze the clicks and hums of new computing devices, microphones, headphones and speakers.
Perfect sound insulation
Sitting atop a series of vibration dampening springs, the insulated chamber is surrounded by six layers of concrete and steel to help block out all sound from the outside world. Fiberglass wedges cover the floor, ceiling and walls, breaking up sound waves before they have a chance to reverberate back into the room. Well. We still have a lot to learn about that level of noise reduction. For ordinary soundproofing of premises however, we are experts. Try us.
