Waking up to melodious sounds can give you more energy and reduce irritability

A 2020 Australian study found that certain alarm sounds can help reduce morning fatigue, so you wake up faster and feel more refreshed. Study participants who woke up to a melodious song had lower levels of morning sickness than those who chose a beeping sound, the study found.

Songs with melodies seem to have an energizing effect, rousing and improving attention, making you feel less tired when you wake up. The reason? Scientists assume that the combination of notes that rise and fall in the melody of the song promotes excitement in our nervous system, which in turn can lead to increased alertness, and it quickly wakes up.

In the study, the authors identified two songs that they thought might be good wake-up tunes: "Good Vibrations" by The Beach Boys and "Close to Me" by The Cure. They are currently testing the tune "Borderline" by Madonna. However, it seems that it is enough to choose a melodious alarm clock sound according to your taste.

In this study, researchers from the Royal Institute of Technology in Melbourne surveyed 50 people between the ages of 18 and 60 about their sleep habits and the sounds they like to wake up to.

Most participants reported using their phone as an alarm clock and chose a variety of sounds to wake up to, including default alarm tones, music songs, and nature sounds. Specifically, the researchers compared "non-melodic" alarms, or those that beep, with "melodic" alarms such as pop songs. Participants filled out a questionnaire that asked how tired they were after waking up.

Those who woke up to a melodious song had lower levels of morning sickness, fatigue and irritability than those who chose a beeping sound, the study found. The beeping sound seems to dampen and prolong the inertia of sleep.

It requires more detailed research. But the findings could be of interest to people in many professions—from NASA astronauts to emergency room doctors who need to wake up quickly and be alert.

But regardless of your occupation , a bad wake-up call can affect your entire day. If you are often irritable, tired and unfocused, try changing your alarm sound settings.
